Allium offers laid-back elegance in the urban countryside of Great Barrington.
The bistro-style restaurant offers refined, contemporary American cuisine, warm hospitality and exceptional service. The name, which refers to the onion genus, has a soft musicality about it, which complements the comfortable charm and elegance of the space. Blond woods and natural fibers predominate in the long, rectangular room that you enter, in addition to a more traditional dining room to the left — where a window to the kitchen offers a glimpse of what’s happening backstage. In warm weather, the front wall on the bar side of the restaurant recedes to expose the street, giving the interior an airy openness for dining and drinking al fresco.
The menu at Allium Restaurant + Bar celebrates the seasons with an ever-changing mix of ingredients sourced from a wide range of farms and food producers in the region.
At Allium, the chef works closely with the fishmongers and farmers of the region who bring him their prized products, which in turn are cooked to perfection. On any given night, it is not unusual to see one of the fishmongers or nearby farmers having dinner at the restaurant who want to experience the farm-to-table concept and see the final result of their initial labor.
Sustainable Building Design
Throughout the renovation process of Allium, we put into practice sustainable building design whenever possible. Paints and floor sealers were all low VOC, 80 percent of existing case goods and building materials were recycled and new counter tops for our kitchen were purchased from post-consumer recycled paper. All pressboard was zero-formaldehyde, all decorative wood was from sustainably forested woods and we made a conscious choice to recycle all of the furniture from the former restaurant space.
“Farm-to-table translates to getting the best-quality produce, meats, cheeses and other local products to create a superior product for our guests… As we continue to participate in the Berkshire-grown movement, we like to pass those values onto our patrons.”

A Little History
Back in 1996, Nancy Thomas opened the original Mezze Bistro + Bar in Williamstown, MA, which has since relocated to a new property. The success of Mezze Bistro led to the birth of Allium Restaurant + Bar in Great Barrington which has been well received with accolades and great reviews since its opening in 2007.
Based on her early and continuing success, Nancy created a full-service complementary company in 1999, under the moniker Mezze Catering, which continues to create events that “tastefully” celebrate the bounty of our region.
